Scientific achievements

With many award-winning scientific projects, Inria researchers have been honored again this year for their major contributions to computer science. Here is an overview of theses distinctions.


Science

The remarkable results of two project teams have particularly marked the year 2017:

  • Aramis project team work (joint team with CNRS, Inserm and UPMC) on the C9orf72 gene mutation led to the publication of an article entitled Early Cognitive, Structural, and Microstructural Changes in Presymptomatic C9orf72 Carriers Younger Than 40 Years in an internationally recognized clinical neurology journal, JAMA Neurology.

    This work combines genomic data (mutation of the C9orf72 gene, involved in neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS) and multi-modal imaging and behavioural data, and aims to detect changes in presymptomatic carriers.

  • Magique3D project team work (joint team with UPPA and CNRS) on helioseismology led to the publication of two articles in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics. The first is entitled Computational helioseismology in the frequency domain: acoustic waves in axisymmetric solar models with flows, the second Atmospheric-radiation boundary conditions for high-frequency waves in time-distance helioseismology.

    They are the result of collaborations with astrophysicists from the Max Planck Institute for Solar System in Göttingen, the goal of which is to analyze and better understand the structure of the sun and sunspots using tools of inverse problems and wave propagation (helioseismology) of which Magique 3D is a specialist.


Awards and appointments

  • The highly selective European Research Council (ERC) recognised the scientific excellence and originality of the work of the Inria project teams with six new grants:

  • Inria-Académie des sciences Awards 2017 were given to three researchers for their significant contributions to the digital sciences and the development of innovative technology full of potential for our society:

    • Olivier Gascuel, Director of the Institut Pasteur Center of Bioinformatics, Biostatistics and Integrative Biology (C3BI), received the Inria-Académie des sciences Grand Prize;
    • Mazyar Mirrahimi, head of the Quantic team, was awarded the Inria-Académie des sciences Young Researcher Award;
    • Anne-Marie Kermarrec, former Inria research CEO and founder of the start-up Mediego, received the Inria-Académie des sciences - Dassault Systèmes Award for Innovation.

  • J.-M. Muller (AriC) was made a Fellow of the international professional association IEEE.

  • Xavier Pennec (Asclepios) was made a Fellow by the MICCAI (Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention) community in recognition for his innovative theoretical contributions in the field of computational anatomy, shape statistics and medical imaging.

  • Nicholas Ayache (Asclepios) was named chevalier de l’ordre des Palmes académiques (order of academic Palms). He was also elected member of the French Academy of Surgery.

  • Damien Vergnaud (Cascade) was appointed junior member of the Institut universitaire de France (University Institute of France).

  • Pierre Del Moral (CQFD) was appointed 2017 professor of the Simons Foundation CRM at Montréal Math. Research Centre.

  • Jean-Daniel Boissonnat (DataShape) is the new holder of the “Informatics and Computational Sciences” chair at the Collège de France.

  • The University of Aarhus in Denmark decided to recognise Wendy Mackay, head of the Ex-Situ team, for her entire career and in particular for her work on interactive video, participatory design and mixed reality. She was awarded the Doctorem Scientiarum Hororis Causa.

  • Laurent Massoulié (INFINE) received the Grand Prix scientifique Cino Del Duca 2017, awarded by the Academy of Sciences.

  • Jean-Baptiste Mouret (Larsen) received the 2017 ISAL (International Society for Artificial Life) Award for Distinguished Young Investigator in the field of Artificial Life.

  • Benoît Perthame (Mamba) was elected to the French Académie des sciences in the Physics and Computer Engineering section.

  • Researcher with the NeCS team, Maria Laura Delle Monache has just been awarded the France-Berkeley Fund Award for high-achieving younger researchers.

  • EDF and the French Academy of Technologies awarded Luc Le Magoarou (Panama) the 2017 Paul Caseau PhD Prize for his work entitled Efficient Matrices for signal processing and machine learning.

  • Camille Jeunet (Potioc) won the IFRATH/KAELIS PhD Prize and the Special Prize from the international jury of the graduate schools college of the University of Bordeaux.

  • Pierre Rouchon (Quantic) was awarded the 2017 IMT (Institut Mines-Télécom)-Académie des sciences Grand Prize.

  • Mikel Landajuela Larma (Reo) received the 2017 SMAI-GAMNI PhD Prize awarded by the French Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics.

  • Florent de Dinechin (Socrate) received the Community Award from the 27th International Conference on Field-Programmable Logic and Application (FPL17) for his software Flopoco.

  • Pierre Lairez won the Early Career Prize from the SIAM/AAG (SIAM Activity Group on Algebraic Geometry).

  • Cordelia Schmid (Thoth) was elected member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

  • Julien Mairal (Thoth) received the IEEE PAMI (Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence) Young Researcher Award.

  • Gregory Rogez and Cordelia Schmid (Thoth) were honored with the Amazon Academic Research Award.

  • Josef Sivic, James Philbin, Ondrej Chum, Michael Isard and Andrew Zisserman (WILLOW) were awarded the 2017 Longuet-Higgins Prize at CVPR’17 (for the paper Object Retrieval with Large Vocabularies and Fast Spatial Matching, CVPR 2017.

  • Ivan Laptev and Josef Sivic (WILLOW) received the Helmholtz Prize for their “fundamental contribution to research in computer vision”, at the International Conference on Computer Vision.

  • Éric Moulines (Xpop) was elected member of the French Académie des sciences.

  • Awarded by Informatics Europe, this year’s international Best Practices in Education Award went to Class’Code, which becomes the first French project to receive this honor.

  • Jocelyne Erhel, from the Fluminance project team and Maëlle Nodet, from the Airsea project team, won first prize in the Mathematics of Planet Earth (MPE) international competition.

  • SmartMesh IP (EVA) was awarded the Internet of Things Product of the Year prize at the ACE (Annual Creativity in Electronics) Awards.

  • Nacim Belkhir and Marc Schoenauer (TAU) won the AS-AC-MA-ES prize at the ACM-GECCO (Association for Computing Machinery - Genetic and Evolutionary Computation) conference.


Conferences

  • The Aoste2 project team organised, for the first time in France, the 38th Real-Time Systems Symposium (RTSS’17).

  • The Flowers team organised the 3rd Robotics and Education Colloquium in Bordeaux (presidency: Didier Roy), bringing together around 200 participants on the theme of educational robotics.


Best papers

  • Sophie Giffard-Roisin (Asclepios) won Best Electrophysiology Paper Award at the Functional Imaging and Modelling of the Heart (FIMH) 2017 conference.

  • Sophie Giffard-Roisin, Hervé Delingette, Nicholas Ayache (Asclepios) and their co-authors received the FIMH 2017 Best Paper Award with their paper Sparse Bayesian Non-linear Regression for Multiple Onsets Estimation in Non-invasive Cardiac Electrophysiology.

  • Jonathan Lejeune, Frederico Alvares and Thomas Ledoux (Ascola) won the Best Paper Award at the 7th International Conference on Cloud Computing and Services Science for their paper Towards a generic autonomic model to manage Cloud Services.

  • Michel Kania, Yves Coudière, Mark Potse (Carmen) and their co-authors won the Best Paper Award at the Computing in Cardiology conference for their paper Prediction of the Exit Site of Ventricular Tachycardia Based on Different ECG Lead Systems.

  • Laurent Georget, Mathieu Jaume, Guillaume Piolle, Frédéric Tronel and Valérie Viet Triem Tong (Cidre) received the Best Paper Award at the 15th International Conference on Software Engineering and Formal Methods (SEFM 2017).

  • Frédéric Giroire and Joanna Moulierac (COATI) won the Computer Journal Wilkes Award 2017 for their paper Energy Efficient Content Distribution.

  • The Dyliss project team received the Best Paper Award at ICFCA 2017 (International Conference on Formal Concept Analysis).

  • Bruno Sericola (Dionysos) and his co-authors received the Best Paper Award at the 16th IEEE International Symposium on Network Computing and Applications for their paper Distributed deep learning on edge-devices: feasibility via daptive compression.

  • Bilel Derbel, Arnaud Liefooghe, Sébastien Verel (Dolphin) and their co-authors won the Best Paper Award at the 11th International Conference on Simulated Evolution and Learning (SEAL 2017) for their paper Using Parallel Strategies to Speed Up Pareto Local Search.

  • Pascale Minet, Paul Muhlethaler and Ines Khoufi (EVA) received the Best Paper Award for their paper Coded Slotted Avoidance in a Wireless Network: Models and Simulations at the PEMWN (Performance Evaluation and Modelling in Wired and Wireless Networks) 2017 international conference.

  • Wanyu Liu and M. Beaudouin-Lafon (Ex-Situ) won the Best Paper Award at the ACM CHI 2017 - Human-Computer Interaction International Conference for their paper BIGnav: Bayesian Information Gain for Guiding Multiscale Navigation.

  • Jean Dumoulin and Antoine Crinière (I4S) were presented with the Best Paper Award at SPIE for their paper Infrared Thermography applied to transport infrastructures monitoring: outcomes and perspective.

  • Michale Döhler and Laurent Mevel (I4S) received the Best Paper Award at the 7th International Operational Modal Analysis Conference for their paper Variance computation of modal parameter estimates from UPC subspace identification.

  • Adam Gaier, Alexander Asteroth and Jean-Baptiste Mouret (Larsen) received the Best Paper Award at the 7th Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO 2017) for their paper Data-Efficient Exploration, Optimization, and Modeling of Diverse Designs through Surrogate-Assisted Illumination. They also won the Best Paper Award at the 18thAIAA/ISSMO Multidisciplinary Analysis and Optimisation conference for their paper Aerodynamic Design Exploration through Surrogate-Assisted Illumination.

  • Frederik Johansson (Lfant) received the Best Paper Award at IEEE Transactions on Computers for his paper Arb: Efficient Arbitrary-Precision Midpoint-Radius Interval Arithmetic.

  • François Fages (Lifeware) and his co-authors were presented with the Best Paper Award at the 15th International Conference on Computational Methods in Systems Biology, in Darmstadt, for Strong Turing Completeness of Continuous Chemical Reaction Networks and Compilation of Mixed Analog-Digital Program.

  • Vincent Claveau, Guillaume Gravier (Linkmedia) and their co-authors won the Best Paper Award at the 25th ACM International Conference on Multimedia for NexGenTV: Providing Real-Time Insight during Political Debates in a Second Screen Application.

  • The paper by Pierre Bourhi (Links) written with Oxford (Michael Benedikt et Michael Vanden Boom), entitled Characterizing Definability in Decidable Fixpoint Logics, won the Best Paper Award at the 44th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming.

  • Jérôme Francois (Madynes) received the Best Paper Award at the IFIP/IEEE Symposium on Integrated Network and Service Management for his paper Knowledge Discovery of Port Scans from Darknet.

  • The paper Shape from sensors: Curve networks on surfaces from 3D orientation, written by Georges-Pierre Bonneau (Maverick), Stéphanie Hahmann (Imagine) and alii, was published in the journal Computer and Graphics, and won the Best Paper Award at the Shape Modeling International 2017 conference.

  • Rafael Angarita, Nikolaos Georgantas and Valérie Issarny (MIMove) received the Best Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Collaboration and Internet Computing for the paper USNB: Enabling Universal Online Social Interactions.

  • Denis Jouvet, Dominique Fohr, Odile Mellaand (Multispeech) and their co-authors won the Best Paper Award for their paper About vocabulary adaptation for automatic speech recognition of video data, at ICNLSSP'2017 (International Conference on Natural Language and Speech Processing).

  • Timothée Haudebourg and Anne-Cécile Orgerie (Myriads) won the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Algorithms and Architectures for Parallel Processing for their paper entitled On the Energy Efficiency of Sleeping and Rate Adaptation for Network Devices.

  • The paper Real-Time Fair Resource Allocation in Distributed Software Defined Networks, by Zaid Allybokus and Konstantin Avrachenkov (Neo), received the Best Paper Award at ITC’29 (International Teletraffic Congress).

  • Gabriele Perozzi (Non-A) received, with his co-authors, the EUCASS 2017 Best Student Paper Award at the 7th European Conference for Aeronautics and Space Science.

  • A Best Paper Award was awarded during the EURASIP (European Association for Signal Processing) 2017 conference to Pierre Vandergheynst, Rémi Gribonval (Panama) and alii for their paper Universal and efficient compressed sensing by spread spectrum and application to realistic Fourier imaging techniques.

  • Francesco Zappa Nardelli received the Most Influential ICFP (International Conference on Functional Programming) Paper Award 2007 for his paper Effective Tool Support for the Working Semanticist.

  • Israel Dejene Gebru and Radu Horaud (Perception) received the Best Paper Award at the 5th IEEE Joint Workshop for their paper entitled Audio-visual Tracking by Density Approximation in a Sequential Bayesian Filtering Framework.

  • Martin Hachet (Potioc) and his co-authors were honoured with a Best Paper at the 2017 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems for HOBIT: Hybrid Optical Bench for Innovative Teaching.

  • Joan Sol Roo and Martin Hachet (Potioc) received the Best Paper Award at the IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces for their paper Towards a Hybrid Space Combining Spatial Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality.

  • Karthikeyan Bhargavan, Bruno Blanchet and Nadim Kobeissi (PROSECCO) won a Distinguished Paper Award at the 2017 IEEE S&P (Security and Privacy) conference for their paper Verified Models and Reference Implementations for the TLS 1.3 Standard Candidate.

  • Philippe Merle and Christophe Gourdin (Spirals), and Nathalie Mitton (Fun) received the prize for the best paper at the 2017 IEEE ICIOT (International Congress on Internet of Things) conference Mobile Cloud Robotics as a Service with OCCIware.

  • Antitza Dantcheva (Stars) and her co-authors received the Best Paper Award at the 3rdIEEE International Conference on Identity, Security and Behavior Analysis (ISBA 2017) for the paper Spoofing Faces Using Makeup: An Investigative Study.

  • Yann Ollivier (TAU) and his co-authors received the Best Paper Award at the 3rd Conference on Geometric Science of Information for the paper Natural Langevin Dynamics for Neural Networks.

  • Vitor Sousa Silva, Patrick Valduriez (Zenith) and their co-authors won the Best Paper Award at SBBD 2017 (Brazilian Symposium on Databases) for the paper Spark Scalability Analysis in a Scientific Workflow.

  • Milagro Teruel, Laura Alonso Alemany and Serena Villata (Wimmics) won the Best Paper Award at ICAIL-2017 (International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Law) for their paper High-coverage Legal Named Entity Recognizer, Classifier and Linker.
