Technology Transfer and Innovation

The year 2017 was rich in events in the fields of technology transfer, innovation and relationships with industry.

Inria has grown closer to the startup world by taking part in the Station F adventure alongside the French Tech Mission. After the Horizon Startup initiative to raise awareness among scientists about entrepreneurship, the first round of Digital Startup, Inria’s startup support programme, was launched. The pace of industrial agreements, especially with international partners, and the Carnot Institute has quickened.


Startups

Inria continues to foster the creation of technology startups using the results of its research. Project leaders, researchers and engineers are at the top of their fields.

In 2017, 13 new startups were founded:

The year 2017 also saw the development of a startups network, notably with:

  • The launch of Digital Startup, a tailor-made program of actions for the marketing, business and financial dimensions of a business project. Inria and EM Lyon Business School joined forces so that project leaders can be better prepared and launch their project more quickly with assistance this year in the form conferences, round tables and mentoring from entrepreneurs and sector experts.


Partnerships

In 2017, Inria strengthened its current partnerships and concluded new high-profile agreements.

Major companies

The joint laboratory on telecommunications networks with Alcatel, born under Inria’s impetus twenty years ago, was renewed in its third phase with Nokia. Six research actions have been launched for four years.

A new major global digital player has joined forces with Inria’s project teams: Fujitsu has signed an important partnership with Inria in the field of topological data analysis.

SMEs

Inria has created in 2017:

  • Lab Voice Technologie, a software suite aimed at sound professionals for speech processing in the multimedia creation chain; EduMICS, in the field of adaptive and collaborative learning and Colinocs, a solution to improve the transporter management and develop income management modules.

  • An agreement on a joint laboratory to develop intelligent search and data protection has been signed with Qwant, the French Internet search engine.

  • The first neurofeedback device to treat attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity in children (at home) is now available for rental. Inria Innovation Lab CertiVIBE completed work on the device, which was part of a partnership between Inria & Mensia Technologies.


Support

Once again this year, Inria has shared its expertise to help businesses grow:

  • The creation of the French Tech Central space, in which Inria has participated since the fall of 2017 within Station F through a partnership with the French Tech Mission. Inria ensures the link between the ecosystem of innovative startups and public research, in particular through Tech Talks during which scientists present their research problems and associated technological obstacles. At Station F, Inria is also a partner of the Microsoft program for startups in artificial intelligence.

  • The organization of a new edition of Inria-Industry Meetings entitled The data and their applications on October 17 and 18. The two days provided an opportunity to discuss data acquisition, the Internet of Things, data security and automatic learning to prepare the smart applications of the future. Presenters included: Francis Bach (Inria), Xavier Barras (GS1), Rodolphe Gélin (SoftBank Robotics), Yann Le Cun (Facebook), Éric Léandri (Qwant), Philippe Pucheral (Inria), Cordelia Schmid (Inria) and David Simplot (Inria).

Some great software

Created in March 2017 as part of the Fondation Inria, the goal of InriaSoft is to promote software designed by Inria’s project teams and their partners through consortia based on certain large-scale software. They organize communities of developers and users of this software to encourage wider use, long-term technical support and future development.

For this, the consortia cover the engineering costs necessary to support the software and organize the community.

InriaSoft added five software programs in 2017:

  • COQ: a formal evidence assistant, 

  • SOFA: an environment that makes it possible to modify 3D biomechanical simulation parameters in real time, 

  • PHARO: platform for developing software using Smalltalk, 

  • MMG:  a library of 2D & 3D remeshing techniques, 

  • VidjilNet: software for analysing high-throughput sequencing data from lymphocytes.
